Fantasy Football Leagues
Fantasy football leagues have brought a new dimension to fans' enjoyment of the NFL season, allowing everyday spectators to build their own dream teams and track their chosen players' performances. Most leagues operate using a cumulative points system. Based on the on-field performances of the players on a participant's roster, each fantasy football owner is awarded points towards an overall score. The simplest formats make a winner of the participant whose team racks up the most points by the end of the season, awarding him a prize.
Common Types of Fantasy Football Leagues
There are six major types of fantasy football games. The most common is the standard draft format, in which NFL players are made available to team owners and selected in a predetermined order. A variant on this format, the auction draft, uses a points system in tandem with the standard draft. Dynasty formats take several seasons to play and are usually only of interest to highly committed competitors. Keeper fantasy football leagues stick each owner with a core of players from season to season, combining the dynasty and draft formats. Individual defensive players (IDP) and survivor formats are the least common, with the former being a defensive player-oriented fantasy football league while the latter axes low-scoring team owners from the competition from week to week, culling down the playing field.
